Aubrey is a college director at Holistic College Dublin, and program developer for our cutting edge Sports Massage course and C.P.D. workshops. His 30 years clinical experience and 26 years teaching experience, enables him to bring high standards of professionalism and expertise to each diploma course and seminar. His qualifications include: Diplomas in Holistic Massage, Yoga Teaching, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Healing Therapy, Indian Head Massage, Seated On-Site Massage, Stone Therapy, Pregnancy Massage, Fitness Instruction and Personal training, Therapeutic Massage, Sports Massage levels 3,4 & 5, Orthopaedic Massage, Myoskeletal Therapy, Neuro-Structural Integration and certificates in Delivering Learning and Occupational First Aid. Aubrey has a particular interest in the pain free treatment of over-use, repetitive strain and chronic injuries and details this approach in his book - 'Myoskeletal and Sports Therapy'. In addition to his busy international lecturing schedule, he is also the current President of the Irish Massage Therapists Association. Aubrey is also a registered I.T.E.C instructor, and is on the national register of trainers with FAS/ Enterprise Ireland.



Alison Kavanagh

Alison is a college director at Holistic College Dublin. She has 31 years clinical experience and 30 years teaching experience, bringing great knowledge and enthusiasm to each diploma course. Her qualifications include; Diplomas in Holistic Massage, Yoga Teaching, Healing Therapy, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Beauty Therapy, Fitness Instruction & Personal Training, Remedial and Sports Massage, Indian Head Massage, Seated On-Site Massage, Pilates Instructor, Dr Vodder’s Manual Lymph Drainage (all levels) and a Higher Diploma in Neuromuscular Therapy. Prenatal (Pregnancy) and Post Partum Massage, Stone Therapy and City & Guilds Certificate and Diploma in Delivering Learning and Occupational First Aid. Alison is also a registered I.T.E.C instructor, and is on the national register of trainers with FAS/ Enterprise Ireland.

Course Description

This module will demonstrate the assessment and treatment of common Sports Injuries affecting the lower body. The rationale, sequence and interpretation of the assessments for active passive and muscle resistance tests are explained and demonstrated.

The advanced techniques used in Sports Massage include:

  • Connective Tissue Massage (CTM)
  • Soft Tissue Release (STR)
  • Neuro-Muscular Technique (NMT)
  • Muscle Energy Technique (MET)
  • Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)
  • Positional release and strain/counter strain
  • Myofascial Release

The suggested treatment protocol demonstrated throughout this video are designed to address the typical muscle imbalance patterns found among the general population. The treatment of common sports injuries are also addressed.

Learning Outcomes / Student Outcomes

On completion of this module the student will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the application of Sports Massage techniques for the lower extremity.

Learning objectives

The student will: 

  • Demonstrate active & passive range of motion assessments for the major joints of the lower extremity
  • Perform and evaluate the results of muscle resistance tests for the lower extremity.
  • Structure a treatment session for the lower leg and foot, the knee and thigh.
  • Explain the typical muscle imbalance and fascial migration patterns found in the lower extremity.
  •  Explain the rational for each technique, when it is applied and why.

Blending of these techniques into an existing massage practice will be easy achieved by a qualified massage therapist.
